The Sea's Anthology: From the Earliest Times Down to the Middle of the Nineteenth Century

By J. E. Patterson. New York: George H. Doran Company, 1913. xxxvi, 383 pages. A substantial early twentieth-century anthology of sea poetry, sailors' songs, nautical verse, and maritime literature, compiled and edited with notes, introduction, and appendix.

DOCUMENTED ROBERT SEDGWICK PROVENANCE

This copy bears the engraved armorial bookplate of Robert Sedgwick, designed by American bookplate artist Edwin Davis French in 1896. The bookplate is an attractive and documented ownership mark, with the Sedgwick arms and the motto “Confido in Domino.”

The front and rear endpapers also contain several early New York Times clippings concerning sea songs and related literary subjects, including material on “The Canadian Boat Song” and “Blow the Man Down.” Handwritten notes initialed “R.S.” accompany some of the clippings. Because the initials match the prior owner’s bookplate, the material may have been assembled by Sedgwick, but that handwriting attribution has not been independently verified. The clippings are sold as early owner-added material and are not represented as author correspondence, a signed presentation, or material by J. E. Patterson.
