Virginia Metalcrafters Solid Brass Thomas Jefferson Cipher Key Paperweight — Monticello Gift Shop
This beautifully cast solid brass key paperweight features the famous Thomas Jefferson Cipher — the interlaced "TJ" monogram that Jefferson himself used on his personal seal and correspondence at Monticello. This piece was produced by Virginia Metalcrafters and sold through the Monticello gift shop at Thomas Jefferson's historic estate in Charlottesville, Virginia.
About the piece:The ornate bow (top) of the key is cast in an open filigree design incorporating Jefferson's interlaced cipher monogram, flanked by decorative scrollwork on both sides. The shank is a turned, tapered barrel form, and the bit features a cross-cut pattern. The piece is marked with the VM maker's stamp from Virginia Metalcrafters, the renowned Waynesboro, Virginia foundry known for producing high-quality authorized reproductions for Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, Mount Vernon, and other historic American sites.
Condition:The piece is in good vintage condition with a natural aged patina that has developed over time — this is entirely normal and expected for solid brass and is preferred by collectors over a polished piece. There is minor oxidation visible in the recessed areas of the cipher design, consistent with age. No cracks, repairs, bends, or damage. The piece is solid and heavy, as expected for cast brass.
Dimensions:Approximately 7¾ inches long — a substantial, weighty piece that makes an excellent desk paperweight or display item.
