FRAGMENTS OF REVOLUTIONARY HISTORY Being Hitherto Unpublished Writings of the
Men of the American Revolution Collected and Edited Under Authority of the District of Columbia
Society, Sons of the Revolution
By Gaillard Hunt, Registrar and Historian Brooklyn, N.Y.: The Historical Printing Club, 1892
First Edition | Original 1892 Printing
Previously unpublished writings of Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, and their
contemporaries — compiled by the future Chief of Manuscripts at the Library of
Congress.
This 1892 volume is one of the most important scholarly compilations of American Revolutionary
primary sources published in the 19th century. Gaillard Hunt (1862–1924) collected and edited
hitherto unpublished letters, diaries, and documents from the men of the American Revolution,
working under the authority of the District of Columbia Society of the Sons of the Revolution.
The result is a volume of genuine historical significance — primary source material that had not
previously appeared in print.
The Author
Gaillard Hunt went on to become one of the most distinguished American historians of his
generation. He served as Chief of the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress from 1909
to 1917, where he was responsible for the preservation and publication of the nation’s most
important historical documents. He edited the complete writings of James Madison, wrote the
standard biography of James Madison, and produced numerous works on American
constitutional and diplomatic history. This 1892 book was an early product of his career as
Registrar and Historian of the Sons of the Revolution.
The Publisher
The Historical Printing Club was a Brooklyn-based private press that produced limited scholarly
editions in the 1890s for members and subscribers. Their publications were issued in small print
runs, making original copies genuinely uncommon in the market. Clean copies of this title
currently sell for $145 from antiquarian dealers.
