Original 1919 third impression of Isabel Anderson’s richly illustrated travel and historical account of Hawaii and the Philippines, published by The Page Company in Boston. The copyright page identifies this copy as the third impression, November 1919; the work was first published in November 1916.
A very attractive copy in its original publisher’s pictorial cloth. The front board and spine retain their striking tropical island design in gilt and green, while the decorative endpapers, color frontispiece, photographic plates, and two folding color maps make it an especially appealing Pacific-travel and Americana display piece.
Anderson combines travel narrative with early twentieth-century descriptions of Hawaiian and Philippine history, landscapes, customs, political conditions, and American administration. The book is a good fit for collectors of Hawaii, the Philippines, Pacific exploration and travel, U.S. territorial history, and decorative early twentieth-century travel books.
Included are the original folding map of the Hawaiian Islands and the original folding map of the Philippine Islands. Both are present and shown open in the listing photographs. The book also retains its full illustrated material and index through p. 373.
This is the exact book pictured. It will be packed carefully in a rigid box with the maps supported flat to protect the folds.
Very Good antique condition. The original decorated cloth binding presents exceptionally well, with bright gilt and pictorial decoration. It has light rubbing, minor edge/corner wear, and a few small surface specks/marks consistent with age and handling. No dust jacket.
The binding is sound. Pages are clean and legible with mild age toning. The two original folding color maps — Hawaii and the Philippine Islands — are present, open well, and show normal fold lines; no tears are present. The index is present through p. 373.
Complete illustrated copy, all 56 items in the published list of illustrations, including the color frontispiece, all plates, and both folding color maps.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are part of the description.
