Offered here is the 1912 first edition of The Wilderness of the North Pacific Coast Islands by Charles Sheldon, published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York.
This copy bears Robert Frothingham’s handwritten ownership inscription on the front free endpaper: “Robert Frothingham / New York ’14.” A journalist, writer, and anthologist, Frothingham provides an appealing literary provenance for this early hunting and natural-history work.
Sheldon recounts his experiences searching for wapiti, bears, and caribou on the larger coastal islands of British Columbia and Alaska. Illustrated with photographs and five Carl Rungius photogravures, the book also includes five maps, among them the folding general map of the North Pacific Coast Islands.
Complete with all illustrated plates and all five maps present. The text runs through page 246, with 16 pages of preliminary material. The copyright page states “Published September, 1912,” with no later printing listed.
The original green cloth binding retains its handsome gilt lettering and bear decoration. Good antiquarian condition, with light rubbing, scattered surface marks, and wear at the corners and spine ends. The text is clear and legible, with age toning and occasional spotting. One inner hinge has separation, but both covers remain securely attached and there are no loose pages. The frontispiece retains its tissue guard. No dust jacket is included.
An attractive, complete first edition with distinctive literary ownership. Carefully packed in a sturdy box for shipment.
