Offered here is an 1851 London edition of Novelle Morali di Francesco Soave, published by Whittaker & Co. and Simpkin, Marshall & Co., London, with Bell & Bradfute, Edinburgh. The title page calls this a “Nuova Edizione,” carefully corrected and issued with an added vocabulary at the end. The text is in Italian and was used as a reader of moral tales for Italian-language study.
Attractively bound in its original brown full-leather binding, with raised spine bands, gilt spine title, and decorative blind-stamped borders to the boards. A period P. Rolandi foreign-bookseller ticket is present on the front pastedown: “20, Berners St., London St.”
Condition: Good antique condition. The boards remain attached and the binding is holding. Leather is rubbed and worn from age and use, with scuffs, scratches, surface abrasions, and wear at the spine ends, edges, and corners. The interior is readable, with overall age toning and scattered foxing/spotting and handling marks. A prior pencil notation and the bookseller ticket are present on the front pastedown. Complete copy: the final story ends at p. 162; the added Italian-English vocabulary is present through p. 61, ending “End of Vocabulary”; and the final Gilbert & Rivington printer’s leaf is present.
