Kadensho
By Ze-ami (Zeami Motokiyo). Translated by Chūichi Sakurai, Shūseki Hayashi, Rokurō Satoi, and Bin Miyai. Kyoto: Sumiya-Shinobe Publishing Institute, 1968. Printed in Japan.
Original 1968 English-language translation of Zeami’s foundational Noh-theater treatise, also known as Fūshikaden or “The Book of the Transmission of the Flower.” This is an important primary text on the aesthetics, training, and performance traditions of classical Japanese Noh drama.
The volume is 109 numbered pages plus preliminary pages and includes color photographic plates of Noh masks and stage performance. The 1968 edition was published by the Foundation of Sumiya-Shinobe Scholarship in Kyoto. Later reprints appeared under the longer title The Secret of Nô Plays: Ze-ami’s Kadensho; this copy retains the original title-page form, simply Kadensho.
